Thank you for visiting the Friends of the Library Southport/Oak Island web site. We are an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to support the Margaret & James Harper, Jr. Library in Southport and the G.V. Barbee, Sr. Library on Oak Island.
What is a Friend?
Friends are people who are committed to the development and support of a quality, community oriented public library system.
What do Friends do?
- Provide volunteer support
- Raise funds to support the libraries’ non-budgeted needs
- Support children’s programs
- Promote literacy and the love of books
- Sponsor cultural and literacy programs
- Promote library advocacy in the community and on legislative issues
What are the benefits of being a Friend?

- Satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to the enrichment of your community
How do I become a Friend?
To join, stop by your library and ask for a membership form; complete the form and mail it or deliver to the library with your payment. Or you may click on the membership link on the left and print out the form and either deliver it or mail it to the library. The address is on the form.
